{"id":6821,"date":"2019-10-13T10:50:30","date_gmt":"2019-10-13T14:50:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bob-easton.com\/blog\/?p=6821"},"modified":"2021-09-19T18:52:16","modified_gmt":"2021-09-19T22:52:16","slug":"hatchet-adze-drawknife","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bob-easton.com\/blog\/hatchet-adze-drawknife\/","title":{"rendered":"Hatchet, Adze, Drawknife"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Andrei showed us some skilled hatchet carving in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bob-easton.com\/blog\/hatchets-andreis-and-mine\/\">previous post,<\/a> and in that post I also mumbled something about my own hatchet.<\/p>\n<p>It is all <a href=\"https:\/\/davidffisherblog.wordpress.com\/\">David Fisher<\/a>&#8216;s fault.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve acquired a few &#8220;green woodworking&#8221; tools and am trying to learn how to use them.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/davidffisher.com\/gallery_1\">David&#8217;s bowls<\/a> are spectacular, and it is <a href=\"https:\/\/davidffisherblog.wordpress.com\/2019\/05\/27\/bitty-bowl\/\">this one<\/a> that led me down the path.\u00a0 Of course, there was an initial obstacle.\u00a0 &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/davidffisherblog.wordpress.com\/2015\/07\/09\/the-great-adze-shortage-of-15\/\">The Great Adze Shortage of &#8217;15<\/a>&#8221; seems to be lingering.\u00a0 Inventory from the well known adze makers is still non-existent anywhere.\u00a0 Did they all go out of business, or is demand so high that traditional retailers simply can&#8217;t keep them in stock?\u00a0 Dunno.\u00a0 I found an answer (more on that shortly), and while waiting for the adze to arrive I turned my attention to refurbishing an old hatchet.<\/p>\n<h2>My &#8220;Boy Scout&#8221; hatchet*<\/h2>\n<p>It is a very simple, utilitarian tool.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t remember when or where I acquired it.\u00a0 I do remember replacing a cracked handle some years ago.\u00a0 After learning a wee bit about bowl carving work with hatchet, adze and drawknife, I realized the grind on this old hatchet was completely wrong.\u00a0 The grind was as it came from some store long ago, a blunt grind that is extremely sturdy and entirely appropriate for rough bushwhacking, definitely NOT for carving.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bob-easton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/hatchet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6832\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bob-easton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/hatchet-680x510.jpg\" alt=\"photo of my re-ground hatchet\" width=\"680\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bob-easton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/hatchet-680x510.jpg 680w, https:\/\/www.bob-easton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/hatchet-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bob-easton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/hatchet-1200x900.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.bob-easton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/hatchet.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/a>Job #1 then became regrinding the hatchet for carving.\u00a0 Using the &#8220;scary sharp&#8221; sandpaper method, I took it from the blunt near-40\u00b0 to something closer to 30\u00b0.\u00a0 The result is much much much better.\u00a0 More bite, fewer glancing blows.\u00a0 It&#8217;s still not the perfect flat grind that I want, but I&#8217;ll get it there.<\/p>\n<p>Job #2, and not absolutely necessary, &#8230;but since I was still waiting for an adze to arrive&#8230; Is it &#8220;hatchet&#8221; or &#8220;axe?&#8221;\u00a0 Some answers to that question say that usage distinguishes the term.\u00a0 Use one handed: it&#8217;s a hatchet.\u00a0 Use two-handed: it&#8217;s an axe.\u00a0 I use this tool one-handed.<\/p>\n<h2>An adze and drawknife<\/h2>\n<p>I found my answer to the great adze shortage on Etsy.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsy.com\/search?q=adze\">Search Etsy for adze<\/a> and you&#8217;ll find several blacksmiths making adze&#8217;s, axes, drawknives and other green woodworking tools.\u00a0 After some additional research, I settled on making an order to Sergey Ivin from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsy.com\/shop\/KharkivForge?ref=l2-about-shopname\">KharkivForge<\/a>.\u00a0 Yes, it took a good while, but Sergey states on his Etsy store page an estimated fulfillment time.\u00a0 Add about 10 days for transit from Ukraine to the US.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bob-easton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/adze-and-drawknife.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6828\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bob-easton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/adze-and-drawknife-680x510.jpg\" alt=\"photo of adze and drawknife from Sergey Ivin\" width=\"680\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bob-easton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/adze-and-drawknife-680x510.jpg 680w, https:\/\/www.bob-easton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/adze-and-drawknife-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bob-easton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/adze-and-drawknife-1200x900.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.bob-easton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/adze-and-drawknife.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/a>Both tools arrived ready to use, sharpened to a level that easily passes the arm-hair shaving test.\u00a0 Each also arrived with very nicely made leather blade sheaths and the adze included a leather carry strap in case you want to take it along wherever you wander.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, I have no prior experience with these sorts of tools and don&#8217;t yet know what distinguishes one from another in terms of the best steel, the best handle material, the best working geometry, etc.\u00a0 Yet, after a few hours of using them, I find both tools very effective at doing what is expected, and very comfortable in handling.\u00a0 Sergey at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsy.com\/shop\/KharkivForge?ref=l2-about-shopname\">KharkivForge<\/a> delivered good tools and I&#8217;ll certainly consider him when I want more.<\/p>\n<p>Now, to make something with them&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Andrei showed us some skilled hatchet carving in the previous post, and in that post I also mumbled something about my own hatchet.
