Resawn lumber – Work in progress

July 16, 2015 by Bob Easton 4 Comments

Did you know that mahogany, like Cherry and I’m sure other wood types, darkens when exposed to light? That if you stack up a bunch of pieces and come back to them 2 months later, you’ll find lighter silhouettes of the smaller pieces that were placed atop others?

Yeah, that’s what I get for doing other things… More sunlight will fix them.

All the parts for the project were cut, shaped, and had their surfaces smoothed long ago. I deferred assembly of this “you can do it in a weekend” project until the carvings were done. Now, what’s my excuse?

The carvings are Tudor Roses. Mary May has a lesson that shows how to carve them.

Nice carving, I need to get back to that but the Armoire is taking up the bulk of my time. Another thing the Mahogany does that I didn’t realize is transfer marks from stickers. I had stacked many of the parts in the guest bathtub (out of room in the shop!) and used wood and MDF pieces to separate them. The stickers left faint, dark streaks on the wood that was easily planed out. That project has taken on a life of its’ own — working on dovetailing the 9 drawers now.

I like the five-sided relief on the roses.

Thanks John. Yes, I have some stickered Cherry that’s zebra striped.

For folks who haven’t seen the Armoire John mentions, take a look. It’a beautiful, very practical, piece of furniture. Watching as it evolves.
